The Khloe series is a psychological thriller with an encapsulation of the inner-workings of a psychopath.

The only thing is that this psychopath is also a media influencer, model & actress. Upon reading the script, we knew we had to give her a really awesome theme song.

HOW WE PAINTED RIVALRY

Episode 1

The pair meet for the first time. Khloe has something up her sleeves.

The pair meet for the first time. Khloe has something up her sleeves.

To gain a better understanding of tension and power dynamics, we explored different forms of rivalry, drawing inspirations from sound design used in The Duellist, to Death Note and Mr Robot. We wanted a musical score to denote a long play of a chess game encompassing elements of time.

Khloe calls him out and Joshua gets flustered.

Khloe calls him out and Joshua gets flustered.

At the start of the series, paparazzi journalist Joshua (J. Jaikishan) gets manipulated by Khloe (Hanli Hoefer) to help bring down her competition. This scene ends with Joshua indecisively allowing Khloe to gain the upper hand.

Joshua has fallen for her trap, hook, line and sinker.

Joshua has fallen for her trap, hook, line and sinker.

We figured this would be the perfect opportunity for ‘Khloe’s Mischief’ to shine, so we introduced a cleaner version to portray her capabilities as a trickster. The score tails out with Joshua’s dolly-in shot, signifying his realisation and the beginning of the hunt.

Manipulation AT Its Best

Episode 4

Through a series of inquisitions and poker bluffs, the clashing duo reveal themselves to be equally formidable in a dangerous game of prey/predator.

They meet again. Joshua is on to something.

They meet again. Joshua is on to something.

Our plan was to devise a score showcasing the first psychological battle of wits, without taking away too much attention. We started out by studying the source material, looking out for key shifts in their tone and dialogue.

Khloe: “Are you accusing me of something?”

Khloe: “Are you accusing me of something?”

Eventually, we found the perfect cue spot to weave Khloe’s theme song alongside her apparent victory, making this one of the most challenging, and satisfying post-scoring pieces to work on.

Khloe throws a reverse UNO card.

Faceoff

Episode 9

Joshua sets a trap for Khloe.

Joshua sets a trap for Khloe.

The two feuding characters spare no expense in a final attempt to overthrow their opponent. Penance for a penny, the episode concludes with a single pyrrhic victor.

Joshua feigns ignorance and Khloe calls for a meeting.

Joshua feigns ignorance and Khloe calls for a meeting.

Khloe and Joshua’s rivalry is one of the main driving arcs in the show. The finale written for both of them carries forward from what we heard in Episode 4. It begins with Joshua making his final move, and the start of Khloe’s undoing.

Khloe goes batshit.

Khloe goes batshit.

Having to resort to brute violence, our score pivots upon Khloe’s counter-move, revealing a thriller piece that builds up and concludes from Joshua’s point of view.
