To relieve her family’s financial problems, Li Lan ends up transporting to the afterlife and explores the wonders of the underworld thanks to her spirit marriage.

Based on the novel by Yangsze Choo, writers Kai-yu Wu, Yasmin Yaacob, and Dan Hamamura bring the legend to life.

Drama. Action. Mystery. And Suspense.

The perfect ingredients for a world-building spectacular. We thought our mission to write for the Netflix teaser was pretty straightforward.

However, oftentimes we found ourselves dwelling over the same question constantly – what does it take to conjure something truly epic? Is it a chord progression? Does it have to do with a particular key or percussive instrument? This persistent thought presented an interesting challenge for us to look beyond musical references for a fresh insight.

To gain a better understanding of the world Li Lan could have gotten drawn into, we took on learning inspirations across the world, from Uematsu’s clever use of impact in Final Fantasy, to the history of media placements with Edvard Grieg’s In The Hall of the Mountain King, to Jin Yong’s colourful folklore-wuxia novels.

In the end, it was a culmination of everything we’ve daydreamed of as children – fire-breathing monsters, cheshire cats, celestial guards, blizzard spells and whatnot.

And so our audio moodboard concluded with a final missing incarnation: “paint it exciting”. We had everything we needed in order to translate magic to MIDI.
